Mississippi Monday | Red Bluff

This week we're bringing you a first hand account from a little gem in Mississippi, referred to by many names and up for debate in which city it exactly resides. In Morgantown (or Foxworth) MS, Red Bluff is the most common nickname for this spot, also lovingly referred to as Mississippi's Little Grand Canyon. It's tucked away from any big landmarks and not formally recognized as a must-see destination in any travel guide as it's technically private property, but it's a treasure all the same.

A couple months ago we heard about a canyon somewhere south of Jackson- a cool place for a day trip and possibly a hike, but the details were all pretty vague. After some serious digging and combing of the internet, we found decent enough directions and decided we'd take the leap and check it out, and we're so glad we did. We had the best time, despite the 98 degree weather and we'll certainly be returning in the Fall for a longer visit. (Find the directions we used HERE and give it a go for yourself)

The canyon is far wider, deeper and all around impressive than we could have imagined going in without much prior knowledge. The highway ends abruptly and is blockaded off, and for good reason as much of the old highway has crumbled away into the canyon. Parking is as simple as pulling off the road to make room for other sightseers, and once you're there, there are visible walking trails made by previous wanderers that are easy enough to follow, though nothing is officially marked. There are trails down within the canyon as well as a trail down to the Pearl River where you can wade in the water, but adventure with caution as the ground shifts easily and there are notably many snakes and much wildlife in the area.

One of our favorite parts about this spot is the secluded nature of it. Though we are so thankful for the many outdoor activities and parks we have in our state, finding a place that was less touched by human impact and a simple a gem of nature was really refreshing. It almost feels like a secret hide-out or stomping ground for friends, and though it was a peaceful and quiet trip for us, there were small hints around that for many visitors it might be just that.
