What/who exactly is Blackjack Wax Co.

Blackjack Wax Co. is an artisan candle company located in Meridian, Mississippi, founded by husband wife team Patrick Trawick & Courtney Taylor. We like to think of ourselves as storytellers, evoking emotions & memories through fragrance. We artfully scent our candles with fragrances designed to transport you back to your favorite times and places. For instance, places like front porches & warm summer evenings.

How did you get started and what was the inspiration to take the small business leap?

I (Courtney) have been a candle maker since I was a little girl, starting out in my Mom’s kitchen. Back in those days, my techniques were a lot less refined. I started out melting paraffin canning wax and crayons for dye, in a double boiler on the stove. We are proud to say that we are now more thoughtful in the ingredients we use. All of our candles are made from sustainable American grown soy bean wax, all natural cotton wicks, and high quality fragrances for a fragrant long lasting candle.

How does Mississippi play a role in your business?

There’s no place like home, and for us that’s Mississippi. We have a strong support system of family and friends, who love us and want us to succeed. If the work load is too great for us to handle our friends and family are always here to help.

What are your goals for your brand?

Of course we want to grow!!! We want everyone to know about and enjoy Blackjack candles, but we never want to lose our integrity. We want to be known as craftsmen and not manufactures. It is important to us that our candles are hand poured and that will always to a priority to us.

What is your background?

We both got our start at Mississippi State University. Patrick studied Engineering, and Courtney, Psychology.

Where do you find inspiration?

Our inspiration comes from the simple things in life. Sitting on the front porch with friends, nature, and especially our travels.

What do you like to do when you aren’t at the office.

If you can’t find us, we’re most likely hiking a trail or on the water in our kayaks. Nature is our happy place. It’s our way of rejuvenating and it keeps us grounded.

What are your favorite places to shop and dine?

Long’s Fish Camp in Enterprise, MS is our favorite local restaurant. Everyone comes for the catfish, but their coleslaw and jalapeño hushpuppies are the best we’ve ever had. Our favorite shopping venue is the Thursday Farmer’s Market in the Town of Livingston. It’s one stop shopping… amazing restaurants, food trucks, fresh veggies, artisan soaps, the general store & a wine garden. There’s also a band every week.

What are some of the reasons you call Mississippi home?

Our state is beautiful, with so much to offer. We have a rich musical history that continues today, and Mississippi has always been a place where artist have thrived. We love the slow pace of life here, and I can still knock on my neighbors door when I need to borrow a cup of sugar.

How do you think what you are doing is helping to shape your local community as well as the image of Mississippi?

Too often Mississippi is ranked on the bottom of too many lists, which leaves others thinking that we are less than. We hope that we are changing that perception. We want people see our products, and know that great work is coming out of Mississippi. We also use our travels to promote our State. We love sharing our State with others and take our hospitality with us wherever we go.
